Virtualization is a technology that allows an individual machine to support multiple instances of operating systems, each of which has access to the machine hardware resources (network, disk, etc.). Virtualization enables encapsulation of applications within separate operating environments to allow them to execute without impacting one another. Xen is an open source implementation of virtualization that is freely available at www.xensource.com.
