Xen has long been the open source alternative to the proprietary server virtualization hypervisors, and the kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) hypervisor is emerging as another option. Open source virtualization can provide flexibility and cost savings, but the lack of strong third-party support is a deal-breaker for some organizations.
