In my opinion, the virtualization management tool industry is still in its early phases. In an ideal world, you would be able to seamlessly manage workloads throughout your environment whether they're running on rack-mount servers, blade configurations, or virtual machines. You'd be able to manage all of your computing resources as a single large pool of "capacity", and then dynamically assigned resources to workloads. Best of all, management systems would do all of this with little human interaction. OK, enough wishful thinking.
Yes, there are several vendors who have either created new virtualization solutions or have upgraded their existing management tools to support virtual machine technology. Rather than mention specific products and features (which will change rapidly over time), I recommend you look for certain features such as centralized management, consistent administration of physical and virtual machines, and adherence to best practices such as those that are defined in the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
