VMware Zimbra appliance released: News in brief

Vizioncore refurbishes FlashRestore; HyTrust offers policy enforcement integration with Intel TXT

VMware Zimbra appliance released

VMware Inc. launched the first product based on its acquisition of open source email software maker Zimbra in February. The Zimbra Collaboration Suite Appliance is email and collaboration software delivered as a virtual appliance designed to run on vSphere. The appliance also offers a Web client and mobile device synchronization and integrated security features including a firewall, antivirus and antispam monitoring. All Zimbra products are now available via VMware's internal sales as well as channel partner ecosystem; the appliance can also be deployed at vCloud service provider partners. Pricing starts at $625 for a perpetual license covering 25 mailboxes.

Vizioncore refurbishes FlashRestore

Vizioncore Inc.'s vRanger Pro will add the new FlashRestore feature later this year and will be previewed at VMworld 2010, which begins Aug. 30. FlashRestore allows for virtual machines to be booted directly from vRanger Pro's snapshot backup images, speeding operational restores, so that end users can get back to work without waiting for the VMDK (or Virtual Machine Disk Format) file to copy across the network.

HyTrust offers policy enforcement integration with Intel TXT

Security vendor HyTrust Inc. has joined the Intel Enabled Server Acceleration Alliance (Intel ESAA) to develop integration between Intel's TXT trust measurement firmware and HyTrust's security policy management software. Intel TXT measures whether a virtual machine is "trusted" from the underlying hardware layer, meaning compromised VMs can be prevented from being VMotioned onto secure hardware; the feature, which HyTrust accesses through a VMware application programming interface developed with Intel, can also limit which physical hosts are eligible to host guest virtual machines that are subject to PCI DSS and other regulatory compliance guidelines. HyTrust will present this information to end users through its graphical user interface and use the information to enforce policies by stopping migrations.
