Data center tour: Equinix shows off its upside down data center

Equinix is a large data center colocation company with millions of square feet of data center space. Last month SearchDataCenter.com toured Equinix's newest Chicago-area data center, which is located in Elk Grove Village, a suburb about 20 miles west of the city.

The nearly 300,000-square-foot data center sits in a nondescript building in an industrial park. Inside, security is tight, the generators are numerous, and the fan rooms are huge. There's no raised floor, as the company builds "upside data centers," as one Equinix official put it. And to cap it off, Equinix provides its onsite customers with nuts and bolts (literally), a snack room and a few video games.
