Microsoft supports virtualized SQL Server failover clusters
Microsoft has had a change of heart about supporting failover clustering for SQL Server running in a virtual machine. Going forward, Microsoft will officially support the practice, reversing the policy it had stated last October. Writing on the official blog for Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) SQL Support, Microsoft product manager Bob Ward explained the stipulations. Virtualized failover clustering is only supported on Windows Server 2008 running SQL Server 2005 or 2008; and the underlying hypervisor must be Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V or configurations certified by the Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP), which currently includes VMware, Citrix, Oracle and others.
Manage Hyper-V, XenServer on the go
Andrew Kutz's iPhone-optimized Virtualization Mobile Manager (VMM) now supports Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer, and not just VMware ESX. The tool allows administrators to do tasks, such as monitor host and VM performance statistics (CPU and memory), control VMs (start, stop, pause, reset and disable network). In addition to the iPhone, the browser-based application works with BlackBerry, Google Android and Windows Mobile devices. A beta version is available for download from Hyper-9.
