Windows Server 2008 SP2 with Hyper-V available for download
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 is now available. The Release to Web (RTW) version, Hyper-V is a fully integrated feature of Windows Server 2008, which allows users to run one free guest with Windows Server 2008 Standard, four with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and an unlimited number of free instances with Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition. Links to the bits can be found on the Windows Server Division's blog.

Defrag, optimize Hyper-V
Diskeeper Corp.'s newly shipping V-locity is a virtualization-specific defragmentation tool that also optimizes resource contention between multiple virtual machines. V-locity is designed specifically for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V environments and consists of a V-locity host running in the Windows Server 2008 partition, and V-locity guest running directly within the guests.

The company said V-locity can reduce "VHD bloat," the wasted disk space that happens when virtual disks dynamically expand to accommodate more users or data but don't shrink when data is deleted. To counter that, V-locity can be set to compact the Virtual Hard Disk, or VHD. Pricing is available by contacting Diskeeper directly at 800-829-6468, or through resellers.

New open source project manages Xen hypervisor
Karesansui 1.0, an open source virtualization management application, was released this week by the Karesansui project, according to the VMblog. With initial support for Xen, Karesansui allows administrators to install a virtual guest OS, boot VMs, shut down VMs, and reach the virtual console directly through a Web browser interface. Future plans include support for Red Hat Inc.'s KVM and possibly other virtualization platforms. Karesansui 1.0 can be downloaded from the project's website.
