Veeam Backup and Replication 3.1 supports VMware vSphere
Veeam Software claims that version 3.1 of its backup software is the first to support VMware vSphere 4, released last month. Other new features include support for Microsoft Windows 2008 and 64-bit OS guests. In addition, the company is running a promotion for users running competing VMware ESX and ESXi backup solutions: Between now and June 15, the company will replace these products with Veeam Backup & Replication at 50% off Veeam's usual suggested retail price of $499 per socket.
Veeam will also release Veeam Backup and Replication 4.0 later in the third quarter, which will feature integration with VMware vStorage application programming interfaces.
New virtualization-aware Exchange defrag tool
Defragmentation software vendor Raxco Software Inc. has introduced a version of its PerfectDisk 10 Exchange software that recognizes when Microsoft Exchange runs in a virtual environment. This capability stands in contrast to competitive disk defraggers, the company said, which cannot detect virtual environments. That lack of visibility can result in virtual machines consuming one another's disk resources and negatively impacting performance. PerfectDisk 10 Exchange with Virtual Aware defragmentation is available on Raxco Software's website.
Starwind offers free VMware and Microsoft V2V migration tool
Virtual storage appliance (VSA) vendor StarWind Software released a free virtual-to-virtual (V2V) conversion tool that converts VMware Virtual Machine Disk Format (or VMDK) files to Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Hard Disk (or VHD) files, and vice versa, as well as to its StarWind virtual storage area network (SAN), or IMG, format. By implementing a virtual SAN, users can convert virtual machines resident on local disk to a SAN, and begin taking advantage of features like VMware VMotion that rely on networked storage.
