Share your VMware code
A new VMware community site is geared toward users who want to share and exchange code written for the VMware vSphere SDKs and application programming interfaces. Called Code Central, the site invites developers to submit code written with the vSphere SDK for Perl, vSphere PowerCLI, vSphere CLI, vSphere Webservices SDK for Java and vSphere Webservices SDK for C#.

Alessandro Perilli at virtualization.info postulates that VMware will use the code samples on Code Central for insight into the kinds of workflows VMware administrators need, and build them using the freely available VMware Orchestrator.

Freeware manages ESX patch downloads
PHD Virtual Technologies, maker of esXpress backup software, just released Patch Downloader 6.0, which manages downloads of VMware ESX patches for users that don't have access to VMware vCenter Update Manager. Through Patch Downloader's drop-down menu, VMware administrators select the file repository to which the patches are downloaded, and it lists the issues that the patches can fix. Patch Downloader 6.0 is available for download from PHD's website, along with five other freeware tools.

Reclaim and recycle unwanted virtual machines
Virtual machine lifecycle management startup DynamicOps released version 3.2 of Virtual Resource Manager (VRM) this week. The new release reclaims and recycles unused virtual machines and recoups the resources they consume. VRM 3.2 also includes an enhanced developer's toolkit, to extend it with existing management products such as patch management systems. In addition, integration with Red Hat Kickstart or SUSE Autoyast improves operating system installation and customization.

Finally, VRM 3.2 adds enhanced discovery, easier install and setup, simple resource reservation, static IP support, global VM Blueprints, multistep approval, and a resource cost calculator to facilitate the configuration of chargeback cost profiles.
