Microsoft SCVMM R2 hits RTM
Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) has been released to manufacturing (RTM), putting it one step closer to planned general availability on Oct. 1. SCVMM R2 adds support for new features in Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V R2, including its Live Migration feature, Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV), and Quick Storage Migration. The RTM version of SCVMM adds support for managing VMware vSphere 4.0 environments. A 180-day evaluation version can be downloaded on the Microsoft website here.

VKernel applets tackle VM resource optimization
A new vKernel "optimization pack" for Capacity Analyzer 4.1 includes three new applets. With Wastefinder, VMware administrators can locate unused storage, memory and CPU resources on unused "zombie" virtual machines (VMs), templates and snapshots. With Wastefinder, beta customers said they reclaimed up to 20% of overall storage capacity. Rightsizer helps administrators optimize VM resource allocations using historical data, laying the foundation for additional VMs per physical host and reducing the overall cost per VM. Finally, Inventory provides a quick way to document virtual infrastructure, and provides management reports.

Capacity Analyzer 4.1 with the Optimization Pack is delivered as a virtual appliance, and will be generally available on Sept. 1. Price will start at $399 per managed socket, which includes the first year's maintenance.

Embotics breaks up V-Commander into parts
Embotics new V-Commander 3.0 takes functionality introduced in prior versions, and divvies it up into three modules that can be purchased separately. The Federated Inventory Management module provides a real-time inventory of the virtual environment; a Resource and Cost Management module allows automated resource management and cost containment; and the Operational and Risk Management module provides process automation and control.

In addition to modularization, V-Commander 3.0 also boasts improved historical data analysis and reporting for better sprawl detection; new policy actions such as the ability to suspend VMs, and group them according to policy attributes; role-based access control integrated with Active Directory; and support for mixed VMware environments.

' App management suite measures end user experience
Application management provider Xangati extended its AppMonitor suite with a Virtualization Management component that merges data about real-time application activity with end users' application experience metrics. Data is presented in two dashboards: one showing individual end-user application activity and performance; and one for application owners that displays how much bandwidth their applications use. The new AppMonitor also includes the Visual Trouble Ticket (VTT) portal, providing "full situational awareness" of end-user activity to the IT help desk through a DVR-style interface, the company said.

Xangati AppMonitor with Virtualization Management is available now and starts at an annual subscription rate of $2,100, or a monthly subscription rate of less than $1,000, including the base platform. The company will demonstrate AppMonitor for Virtualization Management at VMworld 2009 in the New Innovators Pavilion pod, booth No. 1438F.
