SAN FRANCISCO -- The storage requirements of server virtualization deployments can cause headaches for IT managers. A new Hewlett-Packard service aims to stop these problems before they start.

With the SAN Readiness Assessment for Server Virtualization, HP will analyze organizations' planned server virtualization deployments and current storage infrastructures, then use that information to identify and address potential problem areas. The service will help IT managers who don't always realize the storage ramifications of their virtualization projects, said Jim Nivison, HP's portfolio manager for storage and infrastructure services.

"They're missing things that they should be looking at," he said. "They don't necessarily look at the demands that server virtualization will have on their I/O or on the backup and recovery processes."

HP announced the SAN Readiness Assessment service today at VMworld 2009. The service starts at $18,000, and the price can rise to $50,000, depending on the organization's size, Nivison said.
