As VMware’s VMworld 2012 show approaches, we’re hearing about vSphere 5.1 features, company acquisitions and the big news of VMware CEO Paul Maritz’s departure. It’s proving to be a busy summer for the software company, but these headlines say a lot about what’s going on in the rest of the industry, too. Behind these stories are some of the forces shaping today’s data center: cloud computing, endpoint concerns and questions about where server virtualization will go next.

I talked with executive editor—and longtime VMworld attendee—Alex Barrett for a preview of this year’s show. She expects to hear from VMware on how it plans to exploit the cloud with its customer base, along with improved integration plans and vSphere 5.1 details—though as we’ve seen lately, there is always the possibility of surprises, too.

We’ve also explored desktop virtualization and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) in this issue, with Dan Sullivan explaining how to go about migrating to DaaS in an efficient way. Alastair Cooke compares Microsoft and VDI for desktop virtualization—and gives tips on using the two together.

In other news, this will be the last issue of Virtual Data Center. We’re expanding our coverage, and we’ll be launching our new online magazine Modern Infrastructure in early October.

See you in San Francisco.
