Cassatt adds Xen, VLANs to Collage |

Cassatt Corp. has released version 4.0 of its Collage data center management suite which now manages virtual machines running on the Xen virtual machine manager (VMM), in addition to VMs running on VMware ESX.
"We expect that data centers will have heterogeneous virtualization environments," said Daniel Knight, Cassatt senior solutions architect. "In order to avoid the hypervisor costs of VMware, there will be a significant interest in Xen," he said, and pointed out that Xen is bundled as part of Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions.
The company also promises to deliver Microsoft Virtual Server support in a future release.
Another new feature in Collage 4.0 is a Network Virtualization Service (NVS) that automates the creation and configuration of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs).
"In the past we saw a broad, flat network, and it was all or nothing," said Kevin O'Hare, a sales engineer with the firm. With VLAN support, Cassatt Collage can automatically configure segmented networks, for better security and availability between applications.
The Cassatt Collage data center management suite inventories system resources, monitors them, and automatically provisions and deprovisions them to meet availability or performance requirements. The product works across virtual and physical resources, including Windows, Linux and Solaris SPARC platforms, and also manages J2EE-based web services.
Hyperic HQ sees virtual machines
Open source network management and monitoring software provider Hyperic has extended its Hyperic HQ software to be able to "see" VMware virtual machines in addition to the other elements in the stack.
"Customers have been asking us, 'How are you going to address the problem of virtualization?'" said Javier Soltero, Hyperic co-founder and CEO. Traditional network management vendors like Hewlett-Packard rely heavily on SNMP, while tools such as VMware's VirtualCenter have an overly VM-centric management perspective, Soltero said. Hyperic HQ, Soltero claims, "is able to fully represent a virtualized environment end-to-end."
As it stands, Hyperic HQ recognizes and manages 32 different varieties of operating systems, web servers, application servers, databases, middleware, etc. A year of support for is priced at $120 per managed socket pair, while support for an enterprise portal product with enhanced user interface lists at $900 per socket pair.
