Private cloud computing: Hype vs. reality

Is private cloud computing changing IT? That's the promise from vendors and other proponents, but there's a long way to go.

Many organizations are just starting down the private cloud computing road. The goal of private clouds, IT as a Service, is an enticing one, but with it come management and integration challenges.

In this edition of This Week in Virtualization, two members of our Server Virtualization Advisory Board discuss their real-world experiences with private cloud computing.

Jack Kaiser, vice president of strategic technologies for GreenPages Technology Solutions, says his customers ask lots of questions about private cloud computing, and the model isn't a good fit for all organizations. And Rob McShinsky, a senior systems engineer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, talks about VMware, Microsoft and their differing private cloud computing strategies.
