XenApp, XenDesktop drive XenServer growth

Citrix Systems' XenServer is still a distant third behind VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, but its popularity is on the rise.

XenServer is the fastest-growing hypervisor on the market, according to IDC. Its number of total licenses increased 290% year-over-year in the most recent quarter, compared to 215% for Hyper-V and 14% for VMware.

Citrix's application and desktop virtualization products, XenApp and XenDesktop, are driving much of XenServer's growth, and some users say cost plays a factor too. (Citrix decided to give away XenServer for free last year.)

In this edition of This Week in Virtualization, Shannon Snowden of Citrix partner New Age Technologies talks about the factors that go into his customers' decisions to deploy XenServer or other hypervisors instead.
