Data Protection Manager 2007

Microsoft is poised to become VMware Inc.'s No. 1 competitor in the virtualization space in 2008, according to a judge for the Data Protection category. Although Microsoft does not currently have the best data protection product on the market, our judges selected Data Protection Manager 2007 for the Gold award in this category because it offers a vertical, end-to-end, managed solution for virtualization deployments and because it's the easiest to manage and integrate with existing data center software.

Data Protection Manager ensures that virtual machines are properly backed up, along with Microsoft SQL, Exchange, and SharePoint. As a result, the software eliminates an additional management console.

Updates from the last version include support for Exchange Server 2003 and 2007, the ability to restore Exchange Server at the database, storage group, and mailbox level, support for SQL Server 2000 and 2005, support for SharePoint, zero data loss recovery for Microsoft applications, disk space-saving deduplication technology, bare-metal recovery support.

Pricing: A single license for use of Data Protection Manager Server 2007 is $573. Backup and recovery management of applications, Microsoft System Recovery Tool, DPM to DPM replication, and host-based virtual server backup functionality are available for an additional $426.
