Galaxy Data Protection 7.0 for Enterprise Deployments
CommVault's Galaxy Data Protection 7.0 for Enterprise Deployments backup and recovery software is "by far the most versatile data protection product nominated this year," according to our judges. Recognized for covering all the backup buzzwords, such as continuous data protection and data deduplication (although CommVault calls it "Single Instance Store, or SIS)," this year's Silver winner came in second because it supports only one virtualization platform: VMware. Microsoft's product is expected to support only Microsoft software, but Galaxy has no reason not to support Virtual Iron and Citrix XenSource, among other virtualization platforms, our judges noted.

To remain a strong contender in 2008, CommVault should expand Galaxy to support additional virtualization solutions and better integrate its software with existing systems management solutions.
New and notable features in the 7.0 version include a search function, which enables users to retrieve important information from online, archive, and backup data copies; the ability to create online replicas of production data; Single Instance Store (or data deduplication); content indexing; and data classification via the Simpana Data Classification Enabler.
