The newcomer from Symantec Corp.,
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 , wins the Bronze Award in the Backup and Storage category. Symantec has provided the first end-to-end technology in the virtualization backup market. Symantec has moved from virtual disk to tape and also integrated with Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Systems' XenServer. Symantec uses tried-and-true technologies for each of the top hypervisors to grab virtual disk data.
While it hasn't employed an "innovative" approach, Symantec has brought all its backup experience to bear in the virtualization backup playing field and gets the data to tape without requiring scripts to be written. Some of Backup Exec System Recovery 2010's new capabilities include the following:
- the ability to create, edit and distribute backup jobs, policies, installation packages, upgrade packages, and client settings;
- the ability to discover unprotected clients with remote client discovery;
- enables remote recovery of volumes or complete systems;
- the ability to manage physical to virtual conversions, off-site copy capabilities and backup destination monitoring from a central location;
- advanced reporting and management capabilities via integration with the Symantec Management Platform; and
- support of Windows and Linux editions of Backup Exec System Recovery.
