Sun acquisition brings more Oracle virtualization options

Now that the Sun acquisition is complete, the Oracle virtualization roadmap is taking shape. The focus will be on integrated management and converged hardware and software.

The European Commission finally approved Oracle's $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems last week. At a press conference this week, executives talked about their plans for Oracle virtualization, including products and technologies picked up in the Sun acquisition.

The focus of Oracle virtualization will be on integrated management. For example, Oracle Enterprise Manager will manage both Oracle VM on x86 systems and Solaris LDoms on SPARC CMT chips. There is also the potential that future Oracle virtualization offerings will combine software with the company's new hardware portfolio from the Sun acquisition.
